“I live in Brooklyn. By choice,” wrote Truman Capote when such a choice needed to be justified. The year was 1959, the essay was “A House on the Heights,” and the neighborhood was Brooklyn Heights.
Today, choosing to live near Capote’s former address—70 Willow—is hardly a choice but rather an induction into the hall of fame of those who’ve claimed it as home. This means that when one of its addresses hits the market, it makes headlines.
19 Cranberry, aka the Moonstruck house, and possibly one of the most famous addresses in Brooklyn Heights, is one such address. The grande dame of Cranberry Street was built in 1829 in the Federal style. Though it’s called the Moonstruck house, it’s really the facade, and the romantic promenade it faces, that’s famous. Inside, it doesn’t look like the comfortable multigenerational home depicted in the film. It was purchased in 2022 for $12.25 million by Amy Schumer—the comedian and actor probably best known for Trainwreck—and husband Chris Fischer. Now, it’s back on the market, this time for $14 million.
At 5,600 square feet, this five bedroom house is, as Schumer put it, a little big for a family of three. Listed by the Modlin Group, in the home’s square footage are a wine cellar, a gym, and a primary bedroom that takes up an entire floor. Its Federal details: the molding, the wood paneling, are truly extraordinary. It’s the kind of house you could fall in love with. And at that price point, it better be love. As Nicolas Cage said to Cher: “Love Don’t Make Things Nice—It Ruins Everything. It Breaks Your Heart. It Makes Things A Mess.”
Because the heart wants what the heart wants, at any cost.
