When Justin Bieber shared those intimate father-son snapshots with baby Jack Blues, we weren’t just cooing over the adorable family moment—we were also coveting that unmistakable undulating silhouette beneath them. The sculptural sofa that cradled the shirtless pop star (cap in hand, tie-dye attire in full effect) is the iconic Dune sofa by French furniture designer Pierre Paulin.
The Dune sofa has become the furniture world’s equivalent of a Birkin bag—a coveted status symbol that’s not easy to casually acquire. First designed in 1970 by French designer Pierre Paulin, the Dune was never actually put into mass production during his lifetime, making original pieces exceedingly rare and desirable. The distinctive modular system often measures 10 feet by 10 feet in its “ensemble” configurations, creating something more akin to a conversation pit than a traditional sofa. Its modular structure allows for infinite layouts—whether linear, cornered, or with a chaise lounge.
Bieber joins an elite club of music industry royalty who’ve been photographed lounging on the same sofa. Frank Ocean famously posted himself napping on one in 2019 (the sofa is sometimes literally referred to as “Frank Ocean’s couch”), while Peggy Gou, Flea, and Travis Scott are among other artists who’ve been captured in its embrace. The brand Paulin, Paulin, Paulin—the family-run project dedicated to preserving the late designer’s work—even reposted Justin’s father-son snap on their Instagram Stories.
If you’re feeling inspired to recreate the Bieber aesthetic, be prepared for sticker shock. An authentic Pierre Paulin piece can range from $20,000 to $50,000+. Each modular section is believed to run upwards of $5,000, and the original is available only through “enquiries” on the Paulin website, interior expert Monika Puccio from Sofa Club tells us.
While we can’t all live the Bieber lifestyle, there is something sweet about his choice of the Dune sofa for this tender father-son moment—a piece designed for connection, conversation, and comfort. Just like parenthood, it’s an investment that pays dividends in the currency of precious “Little Moments,” as his background track so aptly suggested.
