Revisit ‘Pride & Prejudice’s’ Sweeping Estates for the Movie’s 20th Anniversary

Joe Wright’s iconic adaptation of Pride and Prejudice (titled Pride & Prejudice) arrived in theaters in 2005 and instantly captivated audiences with its unforgettable take on Austen’s classic. Twenty years later, Wright’s romantic retelling, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, still endures. That’s why we nearly dropped our handkerchiefs when we learned that the beloved classic is getting a dazzling encore this spring, returning to theaters for its 20th anniversary this weekend.

The re-release coincides with another timely milestone: this year marks the 250th anniversary of Austen’s birth. In celebration of the momentous milestone, England is rolling out its proverbial red carpet for Austenites from across the world that will be flocking to the southwest of England to enjoy balls, exhibitions, set tours, workshops, and tributes celebrating this literary icon.

Set in the English countryside, the film’s sprawling landscape shots have become iconic.

Set against the rolling English countryside, Pride & Prejudice quickly became a cinematic touchstone that continues to define romantic period drama for the modern age, thanks to its sweeping cinematography, impeccable performances, and unforgettable moments. (The image of Mr. Darcy striding across the morning mist to confess his love nearly became the standard this editor measured every dating prospect by, poor lads). It earned four Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress for Knightley, and has only grown in cultural stature since.

Now, with a limited theatrical run launching in select cities across the U.S., U.K., and beyond, longtime fans and newcomers alike will have the chance to experience the film on the big screen—many for the first time. The restored version promises a richer visual and audio experience, enhancing every flutter of a gown and swell of Dario Marianelli’s iconic score. And, make no mistake, we’ll be here, popcorn in hand, for those grand estates and stunning historical properties that have become a mecca of sorts for Austen fans.

The new feature film will share behind-the-scenes content.

In celebration of the anniversary, some screenings will include bonus content, such as behind-the-scenes footage, cast interviews, and a retrospective featurette looking at the film’s legacy. Fans can also look forward to panel discussions hosted by film critics, Austen scholars, and even surprise appearances from cast members.

Tickets for the 20th anniversary re-release are expected to sell quickly. For showtimes, participating theaters, and special event listings, check your local listings.
