London-born, Los Angeles based interior designer Jake Arnold has a clientele that includes Chrissy Teigen and John Legend, Katy Perry, and Rashida Jones. But now, with his latest collection of rugs and wall coverings for Lulu and Georgia, anyone can get the Arnold look—and at prices far more accessible than the ones he typically sources for his famous clients.
The line includes six new rugs and seven wall coverings that skew traditional, but with clever twists that make them work in a contemporary setting. «I was aiming for designs that feel timeless and have all kinds of historical references, but that are also imbued with a casual California spirt,» says Arnold, who co-founded The Expert, an online platform that connects homeowners with top interior designers. «I was trying to create things that could really ground a room.»
In two previous collections for the online retailer, Arnold focused on rugs. This time, he is adding wallpaper to the mix, including a lattice style called Tillar Botanical (with a rug to match) and a sweet floral pattern called Bamonte. He also put a modern spin on an 18th century toile style with Dors, a botanical design that looks fresh printed on grasscloth.
Where his earlier rug styles for Lulu and Georgia leaned neutral, Arnold said this time he really «got his creative juices flowing.» He went bolder with styles like Stansby, a hand-knotted wool rug in caramel and ivory with sunbursts on every corner. Even his take on casual jute has an elevated detail: the Clairmont rug is embellished with a raised trellis pattern around the border.
For this collection, Arnold says he looked to the «decadence and attention to detail» of 17th and 18th century English manor houses. «That has always been my main inspiration, since I was very young,» he says. «But there are also some French and Italian modernist touches in there too—some Gio Ponti moments. There is a playful nature to all of it. I wanted to have fun.»
