In the heat-softened light of a Sag Harbor summer, interior designer James “Ford” Huniford has composed a coastal retreat that whispers rather than shouts—an ode to restraint, texture, and natural rhythm. Featured in the summer issue of ELLE Decor, his latest project is perched on a peninsula where sea grasses sway and sky meets water in a painterly blur. The house, built of glass, steel, and stone, is a masterclass in balance: modernist in structure, yet deeply soulful in tone.
Pernille LoofTimelessness is a hallmark of Huniford’s studio, which is why many of the pieces featured are artisan-made, as pictured here in one of the home
Inside, Huniford layers handmade objects and tactile finishes—cerused oak, barkskin, parchment—with a curatorial eye, championing the idiosyncratic over the expected. “The goal was to be imaginative and think outside the box,” he notes, and indeed, this home feels like a personal cabinet of curiosities.
Pernille LoofIn a bathroom, the surrounding landscape informed the use of unique handcrafted pieces that are rich in texture.
In the spirit of Huniford’s singular vision, we’ve gathered a selection of pieces that channel his modern coastal mood—refined, elemental, and enduring. Need a few pointers? Here’s how to furnish the fantasy.
