This year marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth, and the Austen renaissance shows no signs of slowing. A new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility is officially underway—and Daisy Edgar-Jones is already embodying a Dashwood sister. Directed by filmmaker Georgia Oakley and adapted by Love & Virtue author Diana Reid, the Focus Features project promises a smart, stylish new take on the beloved classic. Here’s everything we know so far.
Sense & Sensibility will be based on Austen’s first published book.
Sense and Sensibility was first published in 1811, marking Jane Austen’s debut into the literary world, under the anonymous byline “By a Lady.” Through the lives of the Dashwood sisters, the novel explores themes of love, duty, and economic insecurity as they are forced to leave their family estate in Sussex—balancing reason (sense) and emotion (sensibility).
Daisy Edgar-Jones will lead the show.
After the cheeky, neon-lit Emma (2020) and Netflix’s eyebrow-raising Persuasion (2022) with Dakota Johnson, the appetite for Austen with a bit of edge has only grown (though who could forget the 1995 version with Hugh Grant?). The full cast hasn’t been announced, but the buzz is that it’s stacked with a mix of period-drama veterans and some intriguing newcomers, which could signal a balance between reverence for Austen’s original and a bit of a modern twist.
The Where the Crawdads Sing and Twisters star Edgar-Jones is joining the cast as Elinor Dashwood, the passionate, poetry-loving younger sibling whose romantic idealism and excessive sensibility makes her beloved by many. Edgar-Jones revealed the news on Instagram, sharing a photo of herself holding a copy of Sense and Sensibility.
The big question, of course, is who will play Marianne—Elinor’s older sister and emotional counterweight. The right casting here is crucial, but no names have been officially released.
When will Sense & Sensibility be released?
There’s no release date yet, but filming is reportedly set to begin this fall with a release expected in 2026 at the earliest, 98FM reported.
