This year’s best television shows took viewers around the world, immersing us in fantasy and dystopian realities, along with curated versions of the present. In Severance, harsh corporate architecture gave the series an eerie, chilling feel. In Bridgerton‘s palaces and gardens, opulence and grandeur took center stage, highlighting the updated Regency love story. And, in Only Murders In the Building, the sets and locations are as much a part of the series as any of its cast members—there would be no murders without the aforementioned building (or, at least, probably not).
The Emmy Awards break up production design into five categories, three focused on narrative programs and two on reality or variety series. This season’s lineup is stacked, including overall favorites like The Penguin, The Studio, and The White Lotus. Severance is this year’s overall most nominated series, and includes a nod for Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program on its list. Only Murders In the Building returns again, having won the half-hour award for the past three years.
We’ll find out all the Emmy winners on September 14 at the 77th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Comedian Nate Bargatze will host, as the show is broadcast live on CBS and Paramount Plus at 5 p.m. Pacific/8 p.m. Eastern.
