The 7 Best Nightstands to Store All Your Bedtime Essentials, Starting at Just $40

How can you shop for nightstands online?

When you’re doing any furniture shopping online, have some measuring tape on hand. «Nightstands are weirdly tricky to find, they’re one of the harder pieces for me,» says interior designer and content creator Robert Gigs. «I try and make sure they’re either level with my mattress or slightly lower. I usually go for matching ones, but when someone nails a mismatched look, it can be so chic. If you’re short on space, a floating nightstand mounted to the wall is a great option, it looks super clean.»

What materials are recommended for nightstands?

Nightstands get a decent amount of wear and tear, so making sure you’re choosing high-quality materials is essential. «I’m always drawn to wood nightstands,» says Gigs. «It’s my go-to. Real wood, of course. I love when there’s a cool metal detail, whether it’s the legs or the hardware, it adds a little something extra.» If you’re not sure whether the piece you’re eyeing is real wood or veneer, take a second look at the online listing. Solid wood should list the tree variety, and is often more durable than faux options.

Should nightstands come with drawers?

There are pros and cons of opting for a nightstand that comes with plenty of storage, versus a pedestal option without. «Drawers are super convenient for keeping your sleep essentials nearby, but let’s be honest, they tend to become junk drawers,» notes Gigs. «I’ll throw mail in there, random cords, old phone cases… and then months later I’ll find a necklace I forgot I even owned. If you go with drawers, definitely try to keep them organized!» Opting for catchall dishes or coasters for your water glasses are a good way to stay organized if you need a little extra help.

How can you style nightstands?

If you want your space to feel like a sanctuary, adding some design elements to your nightstands can go a long way. «Honestly, I keep it simple,» recommends Gigs. «A lamp is a must, and sometimes I’ll add a candle or a book and try to romanticize bedtime a little.» Don’t feel the need to go for too much at once. «I’ve realized I mostly just use my bedroom to sleep, so I keep the styling minimal, almost hotel-like. I save the layered styling for other spaces,» Gigs adds.
