Modern and spacious, the Palazzo Velabro’s subtle elegance is underscored by its historical significance: This is where, as legend has it, the twins Romulus and Remus washed up in a basket, carried by the Tiber River. The original 18th-century mansion that houses the Velabro was redone by celebrated architect Luigi Moretti in 1960, and with amenities like a gym, restaurant, and cinema, the Palazzo Velabro could make an ideal hub for the traveler who’s mixing work with pleasure.

Though its themed rooms, maximalist design and art-bedecked walls (plus a five-star rating) are enough for the young crowd known to haunt the Maalot, its location is also part of the draw. Situated in the centro storico, near the Trevi fountain, and home to the supremely popular Don Pasquale restaurant, the Maalot has a lot going for it. Referred to as “discreet” because of its unassuming exterior, this place is anything but on the inside.
