Asking for a loft in SoHo is about as original as florals for spring («groundbreaking»). But Unit 3A at 56 Crosby Street is the SoHo loft. It’s fictional designer James Holt’s impossibly chic bachelor pad in The Devil Wears Prada. This is where Anne Hathaway’s Andy Sachs awkwardly navigated Holt’s glamorous party, met her charming-but-suspect love interest Christian Thompson, and reaped the rewards of magazine journalism circa 2006. Now, for $8.95 million, the loft is on the market.
Currently owned by the founders of “The Apartment” (the U.S.’s first concept design store), this space intentionally designed, from custom masonry encasing the wood-burning fireplace to oversized baseboards that elegantly frame its 120-foot-long brick wall.
The great room is vast and bright, thanks to 13-foot ceilings and west-facing windows that flood the space with light. Corinthian columns punctuate the open layout, and custom free-floating bookcases and curved metal radiator covers add subtle, sculptural touches. The Boffi kitchen by Marc Sadler is both functional and beautiful—outfitted with a Miele gas range, Viking appliances, and butcher block countertops.
The primary bedroom is equally enviable, with a king-sized layout, an organic curved walk-in closet (Miranda Priestly would be proud), and an ensuite bathroom with marble countertops, a soaking tub, and a separate shower. The second bedroom is bright and spacious with its own ensuite bath—ideal for guests or anyone lucky enough to share this space with you.
And while this loft has all the drama of its on-screen moment, the building is more subdued, with only nine units in the building (and just two on the third floor).
The home went on the market on Friday and is listed by Brown Harris Stevens. To quote Ms. Priestly, «That’s all.»
